Dyson made headlines earlier this year after announcing it had developed noise-cancelling headphones with a unique air-purifying feature. Headphones for our time.
Today, the quirky Dyson Zone headphones are a step closer to reality, with the vacuum company announcing they’ll go on sale early next year.
Impressively, the Zone offers ANC capable of reducing external noise by up to 38dB for up to 50 hours on a single charge, though their main selling point is of course their integrated air purifier, which you can strap right over your face to get cleaner breathe air while enjoying your music. Sexy? No. But safe? Yes.
Have you ever been put off from going for a walk because clouds of thick, smoky pollution cover your city and contaminate your air? Well, this is an issue that the Dyson Zone headphones aim to address. Their purifier is supposedly capable of removing pollutants as small as 0.1 microns.
According to Dyson, “air in the city can contain a lot of pollutants” and “in public spaces, air can also contain more bacteria and allergens”. Accordingly, Dyson has used its expertise in cleaning technology to, perhaps unsurprisingly, build the world’s first air-purifying headphones. A companion app called ‘MyDyson’ will also be able to keep users informed about real-time air pollution and noise exposure in their environment.
Dyson engineers spent six years working on the Zone headphones, looking for a way to purify both indoor and outdoor air in the context of easy-to-use, portable headphones. The Zone seems to tick those boxes, though the aesthetic inherent in their uniqueness isn’t exactly discreet.
In addition to ANC and the priceless ability to breathe safe, clean air, the Zone headphones also come with built-in EQ to optimize sound based on listener preferences, and dual microphone beamforming technology with noise reduction for crystal clear voice quality during calls.
The Dyson Zone will hit shelves in China in January, followed by the US, UK and other markets in March. And the price? Expected to be steep – £749 and $949.
