MicroLED TVs look like the future and could be one step closer to a realistic proposition. Samsung has announced a 50-inch microLED TV – by far its smallest yet. Flat panelsHD (opens in new tab) reports. Now if only it could do something about the price…
MicroLED TVs are self-emitting just like OLED, so don’t need a backlight. But instead of using organic light emitting diodes, they use small, non-organic LEDs. This means they can get brighter (a long-standing problem with OLED, although major progress is being made in this area), last longer and run more efficiently.
Samsung has been showing off microLED TVs for years, though they’re often “wow” sets, like 2018’s 146-incher. Impressive tech demos? Sure. Completely impractical? Indeed.
But a 50-inch microLED TV shows that the technology is getting closer to becoming more usable.
Unfortunately, the details of Samsung’s set are a bit thin on the ground. All Samsung would say is that the microLED range for 2023 will range from 50 to 140 inches and offer “unparalleled picture quality”. It also said the technology is modular, so it can be fully customized to the setup preferred by the consumer. Can Samsung provide custom TV size making service? Check out this space…
Samsung’s microLED range for 2023 includes TVs in 50, 63, 76, 89, 101, 114 and 140-inch sizes. Details such as availability, resolution, dimensions and pricing are yet to be confirmed, but we know one thing for sure: they won’t be cheap.
