QD OLED TVs are about to get bigger and brighter. Samsung Display – which supplies QD-OLED panels to both Samsung and Sony TVs – has confirmed a new 77-inch model for its 2023 range capable of over 2,000 nits of brightness, Flat panelsHD (opens in new tab) reports.
The company announced a 77-inch model in September, but there was no mention of peak brightness. No company has launched a 77-inch QD OLED TV yet, with 65-inch being the largest size available.
This increased brightness is the result of a new “OLED HyperEfficient EL material”. This refers to QD-OLED’s blue emissive layer, which enhances the color brightness of each RGB pixel. RGB light passing through the QD color conversion layer should be much brighter and colors brighter, according to Samsung Display.
Previous QD-OLED TVs have had 1500 nit panels, though they haven’t quite reached that figure in real-world testing. If these new QD-OLED models can hit 2,000 nits, they’d rival LG’s new G3, which claims a similar figure. The battle for the brightest TV of 2023 has really begun!
The Samsung Display QD-OLED panel should also consume 25 percent less energy than its predecessor. We’re bringing you details of all the 77-inch QD OLED TVs unveiled at CES this week – stay tuned to our CES hub.
