Live stream of the Monaco Grand Prix: preview
More festival than race, the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix is the only F1 event to transcend the sport, a lofty, glitzy affair that usually turns the race weekend upside down. The nature of the Circuit de Monaco means that whoever tops the timesheets on Saturday really needs to be on the podium on Sunday, and for that reason this could be Ferrari and Aston Martin’s moment to shine.
Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have been almost untouchable on most race days, but Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso have both managed to give them a good run for their money in the qualifying sessions. No non-Red Bull driver has managed to win a race this season – that could well change in the Principality.
However, Verstappen comes into this weekend thanks to one of those performances that should make him feel utterly invincible. He gave Perez an eight-place lead in Miami and still beat him to the black and white checkered flag, an amazing performance that extended his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship to 14 points.
The pressure is also on for Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, whose bad weekends have been so disastrous that they have already drawn the ire of Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi, who is threatening to use the ax unless things improve dramatically.
