Indian Wells 2023 tennis preview
Outside of the four Grand Slam tournaments, Indian Wells is one of the few times in the tennis season where the men’s ATP tours and women’s WTA tours converge to compete at the same venue. A de facto ‘fifth major’ and the jewel in the crown of both tour’s 1000 series of events just below grand slam level, Indian Wells hails from the sunny Palm Springs area of California since 1987 and always offers up to 10 days of great tennis action packed with with the biggest stars of the game.
The big news among the men is that Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic will again miss the tournament due to US rules surrounding his Covid-19 vaccination status. The injured Rafael Nadal will also miss, but the rest of the ATP’s biggest stars will compete on the hard courts of California.

World number five Daniil Medvedev has a 14 match winning streak this season and comes in as one of the favourites, despite having to face the dangerous Alexander Zverev in the fourth round. Australian Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas, third seed Casper Ruud and top seed Carlos Alcaraz – who meets American wildcard Brandon Holt in a fascinating first-round encounter on Wednesday – will all be desperate to succeed defending champion Taylor Fritz. The American Fritz has received a tough draw and will meet rising star compatriot Ben Shelton in the first round.
In the women’s Iga Swiatek, the defending champion of Indian Wells, dominates the draw. The Pole, who was unbeaten in 37 games in 2022, will receive a bye in the first round and will meet the winner of Claire Liu and Alison van Uytvanck in the second round. Fifth seed Caroline Garcia is in Swiatek’s section of the draw and is a possible opponent in the quarterfinals. Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur returns from injury to take her place in the draw as fourth seed and is in the same section as Elena Rybakina, who beat her in SW19 last summer. Top-ranked American Jessica Pegula and this year’s Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka are more big names in the bottom half of the draw. Former grand slam champions Sloane Stephens and Sofia Kenin will meet in the selection for the first round matches.
For the British, 24th seed Dan Evans could face compatriot Jack Draper in the second round, with another possible third round encounter for all the Blightys if Andy Murray got that far. The Scot meets Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the first round. In the women’s event, former US Open champion Emma Raducanu will try to put her recent woes behind her against Danka Kovinic in the first round.
