Indy 500 live stream: race preview
2023 will mark the 107th running of the Indy 500. The epic race will take place at the iconic Motor Speedway, Indiana, where competitors will complete a grueling 200 laps of the 2.5-mile course for a total of 500 miles.
Unlike F1, the track doesn’t have many twists and turns. It is rather oval in shape, which allows for maximum speeds on the long, long straights. It is nicknamed the Brickyard, after its surface was paved with brick in the early 1900s.
The Indy 500 is the crown jewel of the IndyCar Series and, along with Le Mans and the Monaco Grand Prix, is considered one of the three major events on the racing calendar.
Leading the pack this year is Alex Palou, the 2021 IndyCar Series champion, who beat Rinus VeeKay with a record-breaking run in the Firestone Fast Six shootout. With an average of 234.217 mph over the four qualifying rounds, Palou is clearly the man to beat.
VeeKay is hot on his heels, though, averaging just 0.006 mph slower over the 10 miles.
Palou has only ever finished second in the Indy 500, and that came in 2021, when he took the series title. Will this be his year? The Spaniard starts ahead of Dutchman VeeKay – both are joined in the top four by Swede Felix Rosenqvist and American Santino Ferrucci.
The Indy 500 starts on Sunday, May 28 at 5:45pm BST / 12:45am ET at Motor Speedway, Indiana. Make sure you know how to watch a free Indy 500 live stream from anywhere.
