NBA Finals 2023: Game 1 preview
NBA history will be made and one of the two hoop icons will finally get their ring as the Miami Heat take on the Denver Nuggets in the 2023 NBA Finals. The Heat could become the first No. 8 to beat the Larry O’ Brien Championship Trophy, as the Nuggets embark on a very special journey of their own. After more than 40 years of pain, this is the first time they’ve ever made it to the big one.
It’s remarkable to think that the Heat were moments of not making the playoffs at all, after losing the opening game of the play-in! Since then, they’ve happily mocked the odds in each leg, beating Giannis’ Bucks, Brunson’s Knicks and Tatum’s Celtics on their way to the NBA Finals. The most unlikely flight ever? It’s definitely up there.
What else can be said about Erik Spoelstra? He has turned a team of underdogs and misfits into a beacon of hope for underdogs and misfits everywhere. The elephant in the room is, of course, the terrifying form of Nikola Jokic, but if there’s anyone capable of coming up with a game plan that can at least hinder the Serb, it’s Spoelstra.
All the evidence suggests there’s no stopping the Joker, but if the unlikely somehow happened, well, there’s Jamal Murray. If he was on a different team he would get a lot more praise than he has so far, but we think a ring would make up for that.
There’s no question that the Nuggets have the deeper roster and higher ceiling, but the Heat seem to thrive on depreciation, none more so than Mr. Playoffs himself, Jimmy Butler. At 33, this could be Buckets’ only shot at glory, and you wouldn’t rule out the player with the most grip in the game reaching out and taking it.
