Giro d’Italia stages 13, 14 & 15 preview
Magnus Cort, Pascal Ackermann and Nico Denz may now call themselves stage winners of the 2023 Giro d’Italia, but the maglia rosa still belongs to Geraint Thomas, who holds a two-second lead over Primoz Roglic as the riders face arguably the most challenging segment of the match so far.
On stage 13 (today), the peloton crosses the border into Switzerland. It was supposed to be the Colle del Gran San Bernardo, an unforgiving road pass, but heavy snow has changed things. The riders are now riding underneath it. What they will find on the other side, however, is the trek to the Croix de Coeur, the last 4km of which pushes the gradient up to 10.3%. Then there’s a challenging descent and finally light at the end of the tunnel with an uphill finish awaiting in Crans-Montana, after another 13.1km of climbing at a 7.2% gradient. Seriously, why are they doing this?
Stage 14 (Saturday) is one for the sprinters. Well, more or less, because before they can get their heads down there’s a little matter of 20.2km, 6.5% slog up the Simplon Pass. That’s the only major obstacle though, so once that’s ticked, it’s pretty much flat, save for a few lumps.
Stage 15 (Sunday), on the other hand, is a horror show, the kind of stage that keeps riders awake at night. Four intermediate climbs punctuate the 195 km route from Seregno to Bergamo, the first of which – the Valico di Valcava – has a 3 km section that does not drop below 10% and goes up to 17%. And just as the riders will feel the finish line, the Colle Aperto brings pebbles into the equation.
