Tennis preview French Open 2023
The 2023 French Open promises to be one of the most exciting in years, and that’s quite something when you consider that 14-time former men’s champion Rafael Nadal hasn’t even been able to start due to injury. Novak Djokovic has stated he is “most disappointed” with the news – presumably after Rafa, no? – but the Serbian will nevertheless start as one of the main favorites for Roland Garros.
However, Djokovic will not be a top seed. That honor goes to Nadal’s heir on clay, Carlos Alcaraz, the US Open champion who regained his world No. 1 ranking at the recent Italian Open. The big two are in the same half of the draw and are scheduled to meet in what should be an exciting semi-final. That top half of the men’s draw is certainly brimming with talent, with Stefanos Tsitsipas – beaten in the Australian Open final by Djokovic – lurking for Alcaraz in a potential quarter-final. Italian Open champ Daniil Medvedev leads the way in the bottom half, with Britain’s Cameron Norries facing home opposition in Benoit Paire and 20th seed Dan Evans facing wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Defending champion Iga Swiatek remains the favorite in the women’s tournament as the Pole seeks her third Roland Garros crown. However, Swiatek is struggling with an injury that forced her to withdraw in the third set of her quarterfinal at the Italian Open with Elena Rybakina, who could be considered the best horse to win in Rome. Rybakina also reached the final of the Australian Open and won Indian Wells this year, having won her first Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 2022.
Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka dominates the bottom half of the draw, but she starts with a tough encounter against Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. Third seed Jessica Pegula is also off to a big start, facing 2022 Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins first. There are no Brits in the main event as Emma Raducanu is recovering from wrist surgery and all hopes of qualifying were dashed last week.
In short, Roland Garros should not be missed this year. Read on as we show you how to watch a live stream of the 2023 French Open online for free.
