FIFA World Cup: The Netherlands beat the USA 3-1 in the Round of 16

Goals from Memphis Depay, Daley Blind and Denzel Dumfries led the Netherlands to a 3-1 victory over the USA in the first round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Dutch got off to a strong start as Depay completed a 20-step move in the 10th minute, five first-touch passes as they switched gears, to give the Group A toppers an early lead. A sensational move in which nine Dutch players were involved in the build-up. And a first finish by the Barcelona winger.

Just on the edge of the first half, Daley Blind would give the Orange a two-goal lead when he hit the ball in the American penalty area.

With the game under the control of the Louis Van Gaal-led team, Hajey Wright gave the Group B runners-up a glimmer of hope when he hit one back in the 76th minute. A move that came about when Christian Pulisic got free on the right side of the box and shoved a cross in for Wright. A strange touch of the ball that caused it to roll over Noppert and the Dutch defense and settle into the other side of the goal.

However, it only took Denzel Dumfries to destroy all hopes for the 2026 World Cup co-hosts when he grabbed an unmarked cross from the left and beat the goalkeeper with a first volley.

The Orange now meets the winner of the Argentina-Australia match in the quarterfinals.
