Australia upset Denmark 1-0 on Wednesday and qualified for the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in 16 years thanks to a fine solo goal from Mathew Leckie.
Australia held Denmark at Al Janoub Stadium before jabbing the Scandinavians on a counter-attack in the 60th minute as Leckie burst into space, wrong-footed defender Joakim Maehle and shot low past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
Denmark national coach Kasper Hjulmand used all the offensive firepower he could muster as he desperately searched for the goals that had eluded his side in Qatar.
But Australia held onto second place in Group D, behind France but ahead of Tunisia, who led the French 1-0 in the closing stages of Wednesday’s other game. Denmark finished bottom with one point.
