If an Apple product you owned broke down for a long time, then you had to have it looked at by Apple or go to a limited selection of Apple-approved repair shops. Earlier this year, however, Apple launched the Self Service Repair Store in the US, allowing people to order parts themselves.
Utilities, Apple’s self-service repair store is being rolled out to Europe. People in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the UK can now buy parts directly from Apple and repair their own Apple products themselves. However, there is something of a catch.
If you mess up your repair, a warranty won’t cover that damage. Essentially, this means that this service is largely aimed at people with experience working in the tech industry, such as companies that make their money fixing broken tech devices. This is not really a service that the average person should use too much.
However, if you have the know-how, Apple will sell you both the tools needed to repair the Apple kit and replacement parts for Apple devices. The toolkit costs $49, and in the store you can find replacement parts for all sorts of Apple devices, from iPhones to Macs and everything in between.
All told, Apple offers over 200 individual parts in addition to tools and repair manuals with this Self Service Repair program, so if you have an Apple product that needs a little extra love, you can probably find what you need. While this service isn’t necessarily intended for the average consumer, easy access to repairs is important to all Apple customers.
For a company known for its proprietary technology and walled garden of an ecosystem, it’s always good to see the brand opening things up.
